Senior Backend Engineer, Data & Product

Opportunity

1m is entering a phase of significant growth, with more than a dozen leading enterprise healthcare clients and new ones onboarding at an accelerating pace. For each new client, we identify, receive, and maintain the minimum data necessary to automate risk-based financial planning with low client burden. Our key value proposition lies in our deep, specialized quantitative expertise, but we need someone eager to design and implement the right data pipelines and structures to fully unlock this potential.

We are looking for a senior engineer who has deep practical experience building data pipelines to ensure that high-quality client data flows predictably and securely through the 1m product. This engineer will also contribute to the product backend through data modeling, data integration, and API development.

You will be joining a small, experienced team of developers, designers, and subject matter experts to help craft a valuable product that evolves with the business. We are looking for someone who is technically adept, deeply curious, and proactively helpful. Because we are small, we value generalists who can contribute across the stack.

Key Responsibilities

• Get hands-on in our current Snowflake/Dagster/AWS environment. Strip out unnecessary complexity, own architectural decisions, and build resilient systems that will scale as the company grows.
• Turn varied client source data into structured, reliable outputs our automation can depend on. Build the ETLs and orchestration to move data predictably, along with the observability (logging, error reporting, dashboards, etc.) to identify and resolve issues early.
• Build the connective tissue to power continuously connected quant. Design repeatable, secure integrations with client financial systems (general ledger, cost accounting, and beyond) that pull in exactly the minimum data needed, with low burden on the client.
• Partner with security and compliance to continue keeping sensitive data locked down. Enforce access controls and make sure PHI never travels downstream of ingestion.
• Bring real backend depth to the product, not just the data layer. Work collaboratively with a small but strong technical team to contribute to data models, services, and APIs.
• Communicate effectively across async channels. Share clear updates in Slack, write and review long-form documentation, contribute to design diagrams, and build prototypes in code.

Expected Experience

• 7+ years building automated ETL pipelines
• Backend development using a Python framework (Django, Flask, FastAPI), REST, and SQL
• Strong experience with orchestration tools like Airflow, Dagster, Prefect, or AWS Step Functions
• Knowledge of data warehousing patterns and tools; Snowflake experience is a plus
• Strong experience with one or more cloud providers (AWS preferred)
• Practical experience across data stores: object storage, key-value stores, and relational databases (especially Postgres)
• Authorization, authentication, and secure handling of data in regulated environments (e.g., healthcare or finance)
• Solid ops fundamentals, including CI/CD and containerized workflows
• Broad grounding in data structures, algorithms, and system design principles
• AI-forward development practices
